In 1992, when I transitioned from a career in the police force to becoming a solicitor, I had concerns about my ability to advocate effectively in court. At that time, Superintendent VL, who is now a barrister, suggested that I join Toastmasters. I jokingly responded by saying that I didn't drink. Little did I know that this encounter would shape my future in unexpected ways. Looking back, it's clear that this advice played a pivotal role in my journey.
Essentially Toastmasters is a platform for leadership and communication development. Google it if you are interested to find out what it is.
I am surprised that there are only less than 2,000 toastmasters in Hong Kong, given the AI and IOT development. Read Harari’s 21 lessons for 21st century and browse “the future skills” discussed in the World Economic Forum for more insights.
Toastmasters offers more than just opportunities for making presentations or improving public speaking skills. One of the most valuable lessons I have learned, and continue to learn, is the art of giving and receiving feedback effectively. This involves providing authentic and genuine assessments without excessive praise or blame. Instead of asserting personal authority, the emphasis is on exchanging opinions in a supportive environment. Mastering this skill is truly an art in itself.
In this cancel culture and antagonistic mad world, I find solace over there.
See you in Toastmasters.
